How to pack a showpiece for a gift?
Why packing a showpiece correctly matters more than the wrapping
A showpiece is rarely just an object — it carries a sentiment. Whether it is a hand-glazed ceramic figurine for a housewarming or a resin art piece for a wedding, how you pack it communicates the same care that went into choosing it. At Moolwan, we help design-conscious Indian homeowners find décor that lasts — and we have seen, firsthand, how improper packing turns a thoughtful gift into a disappointing unboxing experience.
Moolwan is a D2C manufacturer-direct home décor brand based in Bangalore. We make and sell modern showpieces for Indian living rooms, canvas wall art, and curated gifts — all engineered for Indian climate conditions. Our ceramic showpieces, for example, have a 92% clay composition and are rated humidity-tolerant up to 85% RH, but even the most resilient piece can shatter if packed without adequate cushioning. This guide is based on how we pack our own products for delivery across India.
The two most common packing mistakes are: (1) relying on gift paper alone with no inner padding, and (2) using a box that is too large, letting the item shift during transit. Both are fixable in under five minutes.

Step-by-step: How to pack a showpiece safely as a gift
Step 1 — Gather your packing materials before you start
You will need: bubble wrap (small or medium bubble), tissue paper or craft paper, a firm cardboard box (sized as close to the showpiece as possible), packing tape, foam padding or crumpled newspaper, and your outer gift wrap — paper, fabric, or a gift bag. Do not substitute bubble wrap with just newspaper for fragile pieces; newspaper compresses under pressure and provides almost no impact protection.
Step 2 — Wrap the showpiece in the inner layer first
Lay the showpiece on one end of a tissue paper sheet and roll it tightly so the entire surface is covered. This soft inner layer protects the finish — critical for glazed ceramic or matte resin surfaces that can scratch against rougher materials. Secure with a small piece of tape. Do not use cellotape directly on painted or resin surfaces — it can pull the finish on removal.
Step 3 — Add the bubble wrap layer
Place the tissue-wrapped piece at the centre of your bubble wrap sheet. Fold all four sides inward and secure firmly with packing tape. For showpieces in the medium size range (16–21 cm), use at least 20 cm of bubble wrap on each side. For large focal-point pieces (25–34 cm), double-layer the bubble wrap — one sheet wrapped lengthwise, a second wrapped widthwise. This creates a protective cocoon that absorbs impact from any direction.
Step 4 — Box it with zero movement tolerance
Place the wrapped showpiece in the centre of the box. Fill all gaps — top, bottom, and sides — with foam pieces, crumpled tissue, or craft paper. Gently shake the closed box. If you hear or feel any movement, add more padding. Zero movement inside the box is the goal. The item should feel as if it is suspended in place. Once packed, tape the box shut on all seams — not just the centre flap.
Step 5 — Gift wrap the outer box
Now wrap the sealed box in gift paper, fabric (for a reusable gifting option), or place it inside a sturdy gift bag. Add a ribbon, a personalised card, or a small dried flower — these small additions elevate the unboxing experience significantly. If sending the gift by courier, skip thin gift paper on the outer box and instead add the presentation layer inside, directly around the bubble-wrapped showpiece — this way the outer box stays functional and the inner gift reveal is still beautiful.
Packing requirements by showpiece material type
Different showpiece materials have different fragility profiles and surface sensitivities. Use this table to match your packing approach to the specific piece you are gifting.
| Material Type | Surface Sensitivity | Inner Layer | Cushioning | Humidity Risk | Moolwan Spec Reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic / Clay | High (chips on impact) | Soft tissue paper | Double bubble wrap + foam base | Tolerant up to 85% RH | 92% clay composition, 15 cm drop-resistant |
| Resin / Epoxy | Medium (surface scratches) | Tissue paper only (no tape on surface) | Single bubble wrap + crumpled paper sides | Up to 60% RH | 94% epoxy purity, 3H pencil hardness scratch-resistant |
| Canvas Wall Art | Low-medium (corners, canvas dents) | Glassine or tissue paper | Corner protectors + flat foam sheet front and back | Moisture-resistant coating applied | 340 GSM cotton canvas, moisture-resistant coating |
| Metal Showpieces | Low (surface tarnish, bends) | Microfibre cloth or soft tissue | Single bubble wrap sufficient | Low risk | Lightweight 150g–600g range |

How to make a showpiece gift look expensive when you open it
The unboxing experience is part of the gift. Here is what separates a beautiful gift reveal from a forgettable one — none of these require extra spending.
- Nest in shredded paper: Place the bubble-wrapped showpiece inside a layer of shredded kraft paper or tissue nest inside the gift box. The recipient lifts the outer lid to find the showpiece nestled rather than just sitting flat.
- Use two boxes: An outer plain shipping box and an inner gift box lined with tissue. This is how luxury brands separate logistics from presentation — and it works equally well for handmade gifts.
- Add a provenance card: A small handwritten or printed card explaining what the piece is made of, where it comes from, or why you chose it. For Moolwan showpieces, this might read: "Hand-finished ceramic, 92% clay body, made to last over 5 years." This small detail transforms a gift into a story.
- Seal with wax or a sticker: Instead of regular tape on the gift wrap, use a wax seal or a branded sticker over the seam. This one detail makes the wrapping feel intentional and personal.

Packing a showpiece for courier or long-distance shipping
Sending a showpiece by courier across India — especially during the monsoon months or peak gifting seasons like Diwali and Rakhi — adds two extra variables: handling in transit and humidity exposure. Here is how to address both.
For courier shipments, use a double-wall corrugated box (not a single-ply cardboard box). Double-wall boxes absorb stacking pressure, which is the most common cause of damage when parcels are loaded in transit vans. The box itself should be slightly larger than the bubble-wrapped piece — leave a minimum of 5 cm padding space on all sides.
For monsoon or high-humidity shipping, insert a small silica gel sachet inside the inner box before sealing. Ceramic showpieces from Moolwan are rated humidity-tolerant up to 85% RH, and resin pieces up to 60% RH — but a silica sachet eliminates any moisture risk during extended transit.
Label the outer box with "FRAGILE — THIS SIDE UP" on at least three faces. Use a permanent marker or a printed fragile sticker, not handwriting on brown tape (which becomes illegible). Include the recipient's phone number clearly — most courier delays in India happen because the delivery address is incomplete, not because of damage.

Frequently asked questions about packing a showpiece for a gift
Can I use newspaper instead of bubble wrap to pack a showpiece?
Newspaper can work as a secondary filler to occupy empty box space, but it should never replace bubble wrap as the primary cushioning layer. Newspaper compresses under pressure and loses its protective capacity quickly. For ceramic or resin showpieces, bubble wrap — at minimum one full wrap layer — is the standard. Moolwan's in-house packing protocol requires double bubble wrap for all ceramic pieces above 500g.
How do I pack a tall or oddly shaped showpiece?
For tall pieces (like figurines or narrow vases), pay extra attention to the base and the thinnest point of the piece — these are the first to break on impact. Wrap the thinnest section with an extra half-turn of bubble wrap before wrapping the full piece. If the item has a protruding element (a handle, a wing, an arm), wrap that section separately with tissue before the full bubble wrap layer. Use foam cut-outs inside the box to lock an irregularly shaped piece in place if the box has excess space.
Is it safe to gift wrap directly over a showpiece without a box?
Only if the showpiece is a single solid, non-fragile piece with no thin sections — such as a small solid resin paperweight. For ceramic, hollow figurines, or anything with protruding detail, always box and pad first. Gift paper alone offers zero impact protection. The wrapping paper is for presentation; the box and cushioning are for protection — never confuse the two functions.
What is the safest box size for packing a showpiece?
The ideal box is 5–7 cm larger than the showpiece on all sides when the item is bubble-wrapped. This allows a full perimeter of padding without the box becoming so large that the item slides during transit. For Moolwan's medium showpieces (16–21 cm), a 25–30 cm box works well. For small shelf pieces (10–16 cm), a 20–22 cm box with dense padding is ideal. Avoid oversized boxes — they require more filler and still leave room for movement if not packed carefully.
Does Moolwan offer gift packaging with its showpiece orders?
Yes. All Moolwan orders ship in layered protective packaging designed for Indian transit. Our showpiece range is packaged with bubble wrap, foam inserts, and a corrugated outer box as standard. If you need gift-ready presentation packaging, we recommend checking the product page or contacting us at checkout — many of our gifting pieces come with tissue-lined presentation boxes.
